Carmel Petresco

Carmel Petresco is a new female poker player on the rise and began her professional career a few years ago. She grew up in Eastern Europe and New York. Petresco travelled a lot as a child and feels that this gave her the ability to adapt to new situations, which is a useful skill in poker.

Petresco’s initial introduction to poker was through online games and at first she began by watching her male friends. Petresco started by reading various books on high-stakes poker, especially Super/System. Petresco describes herself as an aggressive player when it comes to poker, as well as a risk taker. She has been transitioning from playing tournaments to participating in more cash games. Daniel Alaei, has helped Petresco along with her cash game skills and seems to be somewhat of a role model to her.

Petresco has explained in previous interviews that it is difficult to be taken seriously as a female competitor and it also invites sexism and harassment. However, being female does have its advantages as more media attention is given to females since there are so few of them in the game.

Before becoming a professional poker player, Petresco had a small business as a personal shopper and wardrobe stylist. She explains that poker has been somewhat of a calling for her and it is what she was meant to do. Petresco’s dreams are to win the World Series of Poker, as well as to win any type of bracelet. So far this is not far fetched, as her total winnings to date have been about $99,000.
