Poker has seen an explosion of popularity in the last few
years, and new players start playing the game every day.
Although most poker games are pretty simple, there are
dozens of poker variations that may get confusing for new
players. This article will give you summaries of the rules
for the major poker games:
Texas Hold’em Rules
Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game in the
world. Each player receives two face down cards, and the
players bet based on their hand strength. Then, the dealer
reveals three face up cards in the middle of the table. –
these cards are known as the “Flop”. Players bet again, and
once the round is complete the dealer reveals another face
up card on the table, called the “Turn”. The hand then has
another round of betting, before the dealer reveals the last
face up card, known as the “River”.
The players can combine their hole cards with these five
community card (the flop, the turn, and the river) to make
the best five card poker hand. Players bet one last time,
and if any players remain at the end of the hand, they have
a showdown. Whoever has the best five card poker hand wins
all the money in the pot.
Omaha Poker Rules
Omaha Poker is another popular poker game that is very
similar to Texas Hold’em. Each player receives four face
down hole cards, and the players have a betting round before
the dealer reveals three face up community cards which are
collectively known as the “Flop”. Players bet again, and
then the dealer reveals another face up card, known as the
“Turn”. Players bet a third time, and then the dealer
reveals the final face up card, known as the “River”.
Players have a final betting round, and any remaining
players have a showdown to determine who wins the pot.
Although Omaha players each hold four hole cards, they have
to use two of the cards – no more, no less. Omaha is
sometimes played in a High/Low variation, where the pot is
split in half with one half going to the best high poker
hand and the other half going to the best low poker hand.
Seven Card Stud Rules
Seven Card Stud is a traditional poker game that isn’t quite
as popular as Texas Hold’em or Omaha poker. Each player at
the table receives two face down cards and one face up card
to start the game. Whoever has the lowest face up card must
pay the bring-in, which is a small forced bet that is in
place to create action. Other players have to at least match
the bring-in if they would like to continue in the hand.
After the first betting round, each player receives another
face up card, commonly known as “Fourth Street”, which is
followed by another betting round. Each betting round from
now on starts with the player who is showing the highest
hand.
Players then receive another face up card, commonly known as
“Fifth Street”, and have another betting round. Players
receive a final face up card, commonly known as “Sixth
Street”, and have another betting round. Remaining players
receive a face down card and have a final betting round. Any
remaining players have a showdown, and whoever has the best
five card poker hand wins the pot.
Five Card Draw Rules
Five Card Draw is another older poker game that is less
relevant in the modern poker world. Each player receives
five face down poker cards to begin the hand. The players
have a betting round, and upon completion of the betting
round players can exchange cards from their hand for fresh
cards from the deck. This is called the “Draw”.
After the draw, players have another betting round and then
the hand ends with a showdown. Whoever has the best five
card poker hand wins the pot.
