The most recent of professional poker player Dan Smith’s spectacular series of live tournament wins is his €5k buy-in NL Hold’em 6-Max Turbo tournament victory. This tournament was one of the side events at the European Poker Tour (EPT) Prague festival.
Smith defeated a field comprising 42 formidable poker players to win a cash prize of $89,039 and earn 240 POY Points. His position on the Card Player POY leader board is now just 60 POY points below Greg Merson.
Dan Smith has won a total of 6 live poker tournaments this year, the largest number won by any player in 2012, and four of these tournaments had a buy-in of Euro 5,000. Smith won three of these Euro 5,000 tournaments at the EPT Grand Final held in spring within just a little more than a week. So far this year, he reached 9 final tables and raked in $3,673,806 playing live tournaments alone.
Dan Smith has also been very successful with online poker, having won cash at the PokerStars Sunday Million, which was held in October. He is now all set to overtake Merson and occupy the lead position on the POY leader board. Although the year is about to end, there are still a number of POY-qualified live poker tournaments, which Smith can use to earn more POY Points.
The only three poker pros to have won several times in seven figures are Phil Hellmuth, Smith, and Merson. The top 10 players on the POY 2012 list have won more than $47 million in tournament play.
Dan Smith and Marc-Andre Ladouceur were the last man standing and runner-up and won $89,039 and $73,301, respectively. The players who finished third, fourth, fifth, and sixth were Daniel Kelly, Paul Berende, Bryn Kenney, and Bertrand Grospellier. They won cash prizes of $37,252, $26,665, $21,306, and $18,691, respectively.
