WPT NAPC This Weekend
The Fallsview Casino Resort in Ontario, Canada will play host to not only 18 year old Internet players who can’t play in the US but also a pack of solid professional players vying for the World Poker Tour’s North American Poker Championship (NAPC). With a 504 player field last year, the event is expected to draw more than 600 with the relaxed age limit in Canada.
The tournament started life at The Bellagio and was called the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship. After moving to Canada in 2006 it dropped the Doyle moniker, perhaps because Doyle hates Canadians? We’re not sure of the logic behind taking a legendary icon’s name and removing it from your event but I’m sure the WPT had their reasons.
Since moving to Canada where the legal age to gamble is only 18, the event has taken in it’s fair share of younger Internet players who can’t play in the US. So far no 18-year has taken the crown and last years winner was 27 year old Scott Clements. However, with the recent run of several younger players at European events this may be the year that occurs.
The airing date for this event has not yet been announced by the financially struggling WPT Enterprises. Their stock closed down today at $5.25 a share. Rumors are swirling that WPT founder Steve Lipscomb may start playing events in a bid to boost the bottom live revenue.
It’ll be intersting to see if players like Michael Watson, Glen Chorny and Mike MacDonald show up as its only a short drive for them and they would definitely be the local favorites.
