Review of Pokerstars.com
Pokerstars.com is the poker site that all other
poker sites aspire to be! They have the highest traffic, the
best software, the biggest tournaments, and some of the
softest competition on the Internet! Over the past few
years, PokerStars.com have made the “poker dream” of winning
big, or playing in a live tournament such as the WSOP a
reality for so many players. They have sent the most players
to WSOP, WPT, and EPT events combined, and continue to
payout some of the biggest jackpots every weekend through
their Sunday Millions tournament. Any player that is serious
about playing poker online knows PokerStars.com.
Play For Free Without Depositing
Like almost all poker sites, Pokerstars.com has a play chips
option for players that are still learning the game and
aren’t quite ready to make a deposit.
If you are looking to build a bankroll from playing in
freerolls, this probably is not the site for you. Their
freerolls usually get over 5000 players, run for 4+ hours
and only pay under $10 for the winner.

Software at Pokerstars
One thing Pokerstars knows how to do well is listening to
their players. Over the years they have taken constant
feedback from the players to help build the best online
poker software. At first glance you may think I am crazy for
saying that as it is very plain and definitely doesn’t have
the fancy graphics that other sites have, but don’t worry,
you can change that using custom themes! You can create your
own pokerstars theme, or download a theme from a variety of
different sites.
Now that the looks are out of the way, lets get to the fun
stuff:
- Re-sizeable Windows – Do you like doing other things on
your computer while you play poker, or do you like
multi-tabling (playing multiple poker games at one time)? If
so, you will love this feature. You can re-size the poker
interface to make it full-screen, or a small screen that you
can tuck away in the bottom corner of your monitor.
- Speed – Because Pokerstars doesn’t use fancy graphics
their software is the fastest of all poker sites. This means
less lag, faster games, and a lot less frustration!
- Custom Avatar – Upload a picture from your computer and
use this as your avatar. This could be your favourite poker
player, a picture of yourself, or something funny to taunt
your opponents.
- Show Folded Hands – Fold your hand but want to know how it
would have played out if you stayed in? The Pokerstars
software allows you to see your folded hand when you move
your mouse over your avatar so you can see what you folded.
Pokerstars Games
The following poker games and poker tournaments are
available for real money play at PokerStars:
• Texas Holdem
• Omaha High Low
• Omaha High
• Seven Card Stud High Low
• Seven Card Stud
• Razz
• HORSE/HOSE
• Tournaments – Sit n Go’s, Heads-up and Multi-Table
Tournaments
Pokerstars Tournaments
As mentioned above, Pokerstars.com is home to the biggest
online poker tournaments. Here are some of their best
tournaments where you can win the most money:
Sunday Millions – This is the biggest weekly tournament held
by any poker site with prize pools averaging around $2
Million Dollars every weekend. You can buy-in directly for
$200 or qualify through a variety of satellites which can be
anywhere from a few dollars to several frequent player
points (FPPs).
World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) – In 2007 there
were 23 events, 40000 players, and over $24,000,000 in
prizes… need I say anymore!
European Poker Tour – In its 4th season, this poker tour
across Europe was started by Pokerstars.com. The majority of
the players qualify through online satellites which have now
become poker professionals due to their wins at the EPT. My
own brother even won a trip to the EPT finals in Monte
Carlo!
Pokerstars WSOP Freerolls
The Million Dollar Giveaway Round 1 freeroll
tournaments run every hour (at 05 PAST each
hour) and every day until June 27. Players
can enter one (1) Round 1 tournament per
week. Those finishing in the
top 50
will win a ticket to the Million Dollar
Giveaway
Weekly Final.
Pokerstars Rakeback
Looking for rakeback at Pokerstars? It’s time to give up.
Pockerstars has a strict “no rakeback” policy. Even though
they don’t offer rakeback they still attract some of the
biggest names in poker because they do treat their VIP
players very well. In the next section we will discuss their
VIP Loyalty program where players can earn things like trips
around the world, and even a brand new Porsche!
Pokerstars VIP Program
The Pokerstars VIP program is based around the number of
FPPs (Frequent Player Points) a player accumulates each
month. Here is how you earn FPPs:
First Frequent Player Point (FPP) is awarded for playing a
hand in which the rake reaches:
• $0.40 for fixed limit poker games with stakes $1/$2 and
lower
• $0.40 for NL/PL poker games with blinds $1/$2 and lower
• $0.40 for "1-on-1" poker games (this applies only to
"1-on-1" tables, not to regular tables which have only two
players seated)
• $1.00 for all other games
Second FPP is awarded for playing a hand in which the rake
reaches:
• $2.00 for all 6-max tables (this doesn't apply for games
being played 6- handed at 10/9/8 player tables - just 6-max
tables)
• $3.00 for all other tables
Third FPP is awarded for playing a hand in which the rake
reaches $5.00.
Five (5) FPP credits are awarded for each $1 in tournament
fees paid.
As you accumulate more and more FPPs every month, you will
be eligible for more prizes which include better
merchandise, free tournament entries to $20,000-$100,000
tourneys, plus much more!
The highest level you can reach is Supernova Elite (yes
there are players at this level). To get to this level you
must earn at least 1,000,000 FPPs per year which definitely
isn’t easy, but the rewards are pretty incredible. They
include:
- Special access to the Supernova Elite VIP store where you
can buy a Porsche Cayman S with your player points
- Any two packages from PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, WSOP
Main Event, EPT Monte Carlo, APPT Sydney.
Option B: Any one of the above packages plus $10,000.
- Free entry into the online main event for the WCOOP
Poker Stars
Pokerstars.com is home to some of the biggest names in
poker. They have several big name pros on Team Pokerstars,
some of which even got their start on the site. These
include: Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer, Chris Moneymaker,
Barry Greenstein, Joe Hachem, Isabelle Mercier, Humberto
Brenes, Katja Thater, Dario Minieri, Tuan Lam and many more!
Security at Pokerstars.com
Pokerstars.com is one poker site that you won’t be able to
hack! I have never seen a poker site with better security
than Pokerstars.com. They have even gone as far as
disqualifying winners of major online tournaments because
they were found to be colluding with other players, or had
other suspicious activity tied to their account. They scan
for bots regularly making it practically impossible to cheat
on Pokerstars. At the time of this review there are no known
security issues with Pokerstars.
The software itself also has built-in security features
which include:
• A CA certificate key that is 1024 bit length.
• Client software that uses the certificates issued by their
own Certificate Authority (CA) to authenticate their servers
• Client software that uses the industry standard SSLv3
protocol. It is configured to use RSA for authentication and
key generation and triple-DES (EDE3, in outer-CBC mode) for
encryption. Currently they are using 512-bit RSA key, which
according to [1] is sufficient for short and medium-term (up
to several years) secrets. As they update server private
keys every three months, we are secure with a good safety
margin. The use of Triple-DES EDE3 for session encryption is
considered even safer.
• No private data, such as pocket cards, is ever transferred
to other players
